Investment in cocoa-free chocolate startup WNWN Food Labs


Martin Braun-Gruppe is excited to announce that it has participated in the Series A funding round of WNWN Food Labs through its parent company Geschwister Oetker Beteiligungen KG. WNWN Food Labs is a London-based food tech startup that has developed a highly scalable process to produce a flavour-identical, cocoa-free and lower-cost alternative chocolate. It uses traditional fermentation and advanced food processing techniques.

The company's alternative cocoa-free chocolate looks, smells, tastes, crunches and bakes like real chocolate. The recipe is vegan, caffeine-free, gluten-free and palm oil-free. It also contains less sugar.
This investment is of importance for Martin Braun-Gruppe to further drive innovation in the company. "WNWN Food Labs has convinced us, especially our R&D and marketing experts with years of experience in the food and bakery industry, that they are capable of leading a new market," says Dr. Detlev Krüger, Chairman of the Management Board of Martin Braun-Gruppe and member of the management board of Geschwister Oetker Beteiligungen KG.

In addition, WNWN's approach opens up completely new ways in the areas of sustainability and resource conservation through the use of alternative raw materials, which is more important than ever: cocoa plants are threatened by climate change - rising temperatures and a lack of rainfall have experts predicting a shortage of chocolate. According to WNWN's own calculations, their alternative chocolate causes about 80 % less carbon dioxide emissions and requires 86 % less water during the production process compared to conventional chocolate.
In future, Martin Braun-Gruppe will bundle its innovation and scouting activities under its newly founded strategic venture capital arm Martin's Bakehouse.
